Sufism is about the Knowledge of the Heart

Apr 1, 2016 | Divine Names

Sufism means purification. The Sufi path is about purifying the heart – washing away all of the veils that have covered over the inner truth to reveal the true knowledge that exists within.

The poet Rumi said, “Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers you have built against it.”

Muhyiddin Ibn al-Arabi, the Shaykh al-Akbar said, “You need to wash with the water of the truth.”

Our beloved guide Sidi Shaykh Muhammad al-Jamal said, “All the secrets are in the heart of your soul. Everything is inside you.”

One of the most beautiful things about the University of Sufism is that the teachings go far beyond academic learning. While there is a cognitive component to the education students receive at UOS, true knowledge is acquired when you can experience the teachings and unveil the knowledge of your own heart.

With the integration of the experiential “tasting” of the teachings, your being is transformed. The knowing then comes from within you – from the secrets in the heart of your soul. This transforms how you show up in the world. It solidifies your knowing of the truth of who and what you are. It strengthens your sense of purpose and brings healing to your relationships and all of your life.

The changes you experience in your inner being influence how you experience life and how you bring your gifts into the world. Students from a variety of backgrounds and professions have carried the deeper meanings of these teachings into the world through serving as medical doctors, nurses, acupuncturists, psychotherapists, life coaches, stay-at-home parents, lawyers, business professionals, massage therapists, ministers, mediators, musicians, artists, college graduates seeking to further their education, and so much more.

I share this to illustrate that there are no limits on the difference you can make in your life or the lives of others. You don’t need to be a professional minister or healthcare provider or mediator to be a change-maker or influence the lives of those you care about.

If you feel a calling in your heart to make a difference in the world, why ignore it? As Sidi would say, know Who calls you. Find a way to answer that call.

If your heart is calling you to a deeper knowing or a higher purpose, we invite you to join us for the upcoming Masters of Divinity program. We have a new class starting in just 2 weeks on April 16, 2016.
