The Importance of Politeness in Prayer

Apr 20, 2011 | Sufism

When you pray to Allah, pray deeply with the highest level of politeness and this has to do with coming to Allah in deep humility.

The first essential aspect of praying to Allah, the Most High, concerns politeness. Sufis call this adab. Politeness goes beyond manners but has to do with the refinement of manners and the subtlety of manners and perception. As your heart comes closer to God, the heart becomes refined and it requires the deepest politeness in order to be admitted to the fullest measure of the Divine blessings. For example, Jesus, [pbub], said “blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Other ways to describe this process is washing your ego of attachments, purifying the heart, having deep humility, being needy for God’s help, prostrating in sincere surrender to God. When you pray to Allah, pray deeply with the highest level of politeness and this has to do with coming to Allah with deep humility.
